Why do we act out sexually?
Dr. Timothy Fong addresses this in his article, “Understanding and Managing Sexual Behaviors.” He writes, “Psychologically, sexual behaviors serve to escape emotional or physical pain or are a way of dealing with life stressors. The irony is that the sexual behaviors become the primary way of coping and handling problems that, in turn, creates a cycle of more problems and increasing desperation, shame, and preoccupation.”
What is the answer? Anne Lamott said, “The solution is always spiritual.”
I agree. That is not to say the entire solution is spiritual. But if you try to get well apart from a solid spiritual foundation, you will do so at your own risk.
Jesus said, “Come to me, you who labor and are heavily burdened” (Matthew 11:28). Coming to Jesus isn’t all you’ll need to do to find recovery. But it’s a really good start.
Recovery Step: Sometimes the easiest way to solve a problem is to stop participating in the problem. And that is a step you can take – with Jesus by your side.
